You are probably tired of hearing about “bailouts” and “Emergency Economic Stabilization plans,” but here is a little story that might help explain a little bit about how we got to this point. Young Henry moved to Texas and bought a mule from a farmer for $100. The farmer agreed to deliver the mule the next day. The next day the farmer drove up and said, “Sorry son, but I have some bad news, your mule died.” Henry replied, “Well, then just give me my money back.” The farmer said, “Can't do that. I went and spent it already.” Henry said, “Oh. Well, then, just bring me the dead mule.” The farmer asked, “What ya gonna do with him?” Henry said, “I'm going to raffle him off.” The farmer said, “You can't raffle off a dead mule!” Henry said, “Sure I can. Watch me. I just won't tell anybody he's dead.” A month later, the farmer met up with Henry and asked, “How’d things work out with the mule?” Henry said, “I raffled him off. I sold 500 tickets at two dollars a piece and made a 880% profit.” The farmer asked, “How did you get away with that? Didn't anybody complain?” Henry said, “Just the guy who won. So I gave him his two dollars back.”
After 30 years at Goldman Sachs, Henry now runs the Treasury Department.
