The family and I have just returned from a cruise vacation -- our very first. We sailed from Miami to Roatan (Honduras) to Belize to Cozumel to the Bahamas, and returned to Miami this past Sunday. I mention this because it is one of the reasons that I have not been doing too well at blog posts lately.
While ashore on Roatan we rented a car and explored the island. Now, I admit that I have led a rather sheltered life, and this was my first experience with the third world. Sure, we all have experienced the third world via television and movies and photographs, but it can still be a little unsettling to see it first hand. For instance, referring to the title of this piece, how does living in an old shipping container near the airport sound to you?

Century 21 has offices worldwide -- even in the third world.

I never stopped in, but I wonder what a 1 room shack w/ocean view and no sanitary facilities is going for on Roatan these days?

Typical housing in the better neighborhoods, such as Flowers Bay.

After experiencing this, one gets to go back to the ship and contrast conditions ashore with life aboard.

One more observation -- have to admit that I was impressed that, as awful as much of the housing is, even in the most run-down neighborhoods, the people on the street were always neat and clean and with their clothing in excellent condition. The residents take very good care of themselves as regards personal appearance, better than many folks in the U.S.
And lastly, you won't see a sunset like this in the Northwoods.
