Last Tuesday was election day here in Manitowish Waters just as it was throughout Wisconsin, and I was unsuccessful in my attempt to gain a seat on the town board of supervisors. Before the vote total was announced I was feeling fairly confident, though my confidence was based on nothing more than the many words of support that I received from numerous individuals throughout the community, and of course, wishful thinking. I was even spending a fair amount of time the prior two days thinking about the ideas that I wanted to bring to the board and town government once I was elected. As it turned out, this feeling of confidence was unfounded.
I campaigned in the best town board fashion with several mass mailings, newspaper ads, participation in the candidate forum, etc. However, I apparently didn’t fully understand what I was dealing with. For instance, one of the incumbents faired poorly in the primary, but ran away from everyone else in the general election, much to the surprise of many observers. I have no explanation for that, just a theory or two which I don't care to expound upon. Anyway, it is over, there have been no changes in the Manitowish Waters Town Board and hopefully the board will once again be able to get its act together.
The North Lakeland Elementary School funding referendum also failed in Manitowish Waters, but did pass district-wide, which was one positive outcome of the day's results.
I will leave you with a 2008 photo of my son and I amusing ourselves somewhere along the Big Sur coastline.
