I have been quite busy the last several months - plus suffering from a bit of writer's block - so haven't been doing much in the way of writing, for this blog or otherwise. But I couldn't let the first snowfall pass without some kind of comment.
To be sure, it was just a light dusting of snow early this morning, but who is ready even for that? The leaves are still resplendent in their fall color and haven't yet even begun to drop from the trees, though that can't be far off. Our first killing frost was not too many days ago. We just took out boat out of the water on Wednesday. All of this right on the heels of an absolutely beautiful September which was more like summer than fall, and a summer, quite frankly, that was all too often more like fall than summer.
The Manitowish chain water levels are dropping as the reservoir is being drawn down to its winter level. The chain, like most of the drainage lakes in the north, fared quite well as far as water levels go this past year, even though 2009 has been quite dry. Not so the seepage lakes of the north -- they continue to show the effects of the on-going multi-year drought that is gripping the Northwoods. Maybe we will get a lot of snow this winter; that will help. Only don't start just yet.
Good bye, Summer! "We hardly knew ye!"
